Based in Daejeon, Woosong University opened in 1995.
It is based on three adjacent campuses – West, East and Sol Bridge – close to Daejeon Railway state, an important junction in the national network. Most activities are concentrated on the West campus.
The university has a range of schools including software convergence, health and welfare, hotel and culinary, railroad transportation and the graduate school.
They supplement the three specialist international schools – the SolBridge International School of Business, the Endicott School of International Studies and the JW Kim School of Future Studies set up in 2020.
International students have a choice of two residences, the International Dormitory on West Campus and Sol-Geo on the East.
There are two graduation ceremonies each year.

Make a Real Impact in Defence Research

We're looking for an Industry Research Fellow or Research Assistant to join a collaborative team working on high-impact research in defence materials and structures. This role is part of a partnership between RMIT and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), through the Centre for Advanced Defence Structures and Materials Experimentation (CADSME).

If you're passionate about experimental testing, real-world research, and contributing to Australia's defence capabilities, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

You'll be part of a research team focused on large-scale structural testing of aircraft components. You'll support the chief investigator in delivering high-quality reports, preparing publications, and helping to share the findings through conferences and journals. As your experience grows, you'll take on more responsibility and contribute more independently to the research program. We welcome applicants at either Level A (Research Assistant) or Level B (Research Fellow).

To be successful for the Level A Industry Research Assistant appointment, you will have (but not limited to):


	Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field.
	Experience and/or understanding of structures and materials testing, preferably large-scale testing.
	Experience and/or understanding of basic test concepts such as load cells, actuators, strain gauges and hydraulic systems.
	Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.
	Ability to build effective networks and generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government.
	Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required.
	Demonstrated high level communication skills.


To be successful for the Level B Industry Research Fellow appointment you have (but not limited to):


	Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs as evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.
	Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
	Experience and/or understanding of structures and materials testing, preferably large-scale testing.
	Experience and/or understanding of basic test concepts such as load cells, actuators, strain gauges and hydraulic systems.
	Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.

About the International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing

The International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing work collaboratively with national and international partners to improve health care, access to pathology testing, and improve health outcomes.

In this position, you will work on microscopy-integrable measurement technologies used to study three-dimensional cell culture models of breast cancer tissues. This PhD candidate position is supported by the Cell-Scale Biomechanics Lab?, and is part of the lab’s recent technology-development projects, aimed at improving the accuracy of drug efficacy screening for chemotherapy. This position’s focus is on developing engineered systems and methods to quantify the physical interactions between migrating cancer cells and the extracellular matrix, as well as advancing related technologies toward biomedical applications. ?The successful candidate will contribute to our lab’s microscale studies on the role of extracellular matrix mechanics, particularly in chemoresistance.? Notably, the biological aspects of chemoresistance and drug efficacy screening will be the responsibility of the lab’s postdoctoral researcher, who will work together with the PhD candidate. Applicants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our existing publications.

In this work, there is also an expectation to be innovation-oriented, to help us drive the gradual development of these technologies toward real-world applications. This involves engineering experimental hardware for cell culturing workflows, optimizing experimental processes, and automatization. In discussion with the successful candidate, they will choose further research areas within our group, such as enhancing the spatial and temporal resolution of the measurements, and integrating simultaneous data acquisition with fluorescence live-cell microscopy. This PhD position offers the opportunity to develop technologies for acquiring novel data on cancer tissue biomechanics—information that has been previously unavailable and could benefit the broader biomedical community, including the pharmaceutical industry.

Qualifications


	
	Master-level degree in electrical engineering, physics, mechanical engineering or another relevant field applicable to the measurement technology development. For this position, we are unable to consider significantly different backgrounds, such as biology- and simulation-focused.
	
	
	Expected experience in one of the following or a closely related area, particularly in experimental work: biophysics, rheology, soft matter physics, or microrobotics.
	
	
	Further beneficial experience includes projects in biomedical instrumentation, experimental hardware automation and programming, and computational science.
	
	
	Scientific publications in a relevant area are considered a significant benefit in our evaluation.
	


Our research projects require the skills to work in a self-driven, independent manner, and the abilities to collaborate with others. These projects are collaborative not just within our team but also domestically and internationally. A successful candidate will be open to learning new research areas in the collaborations. With a high research performance, there are potential opportunities for researcher mobility in collaborating research groups, stationed at Karolinska Institute, ETH Zurich, and Stanford University. The PhD candidate is expected to develop a strong scientific writing ability, and a fluent spoken English is needed in this work.

The starting salary of a doctoral researcher is 3000 € per month, in accordance with the salary system of Aalto University.
