The CAI4CAI group, led by Prof Tom Vercauteren, is an academic research group focusing on Contextual Artificial Intelligence for Computer Assisted Interventions. Our engineering research aims at improving surgical and interventional sciences by exploiting learning-based approaches for multi-modal reasoning. We take a multidisciplinary, collaborative approach to solve clinical challenges.?

About the department:

The mission of the Department of Surgical & Interventional Engineering (SIE) within the School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences (BMEIS) is to bring together engineering and clinical experts to develop new surgical and interventional technologies for a wide range of clinical applications with a focus on combining diagnostic information to support image-guidance during procedures. The department boasts unique world-class facilities for SIE research. Our Validation Suite is a unique combination of an Integration Room, a versatile laboratory space where researchers can setup complex novel medical systems into fully integrated platforms, and an Intervention Room, a state-of-the-art simulated operative theatre where the technology can be deployed and tested on post-mortem models in a realistic surgical environment.?

About The Role

We are seeking to recruit research software engineers to help translate the next generation of AI-assisted imaging systems for surgical guidance. The postholder, based within the Department of Surgical & Interventional Engineering at King’s College London, will play a key role in collaborative projects with King’s College Hospital. The role will involve supporting two ongoing clinical neurosurgery study. The successful candidates will join the clinical study team to help curate high-quality data.?

The postholders will help support data analysis tasks and work on computational algorithms to help streamline data annotation. Image computing activities involve expanding on interactive segmentation algorithms to accelerate data annotation. The recruited individuals will complement our multidisciplinary team, undertake research in computer-assisted intervention, and consolidate our existing software infrastructure.?

The post involves close and active collaboration with the surgical team, researchers, and engineers. The candidate will work closely with the rest of the team to correlate surgical data with other rich clinical data sources (e.g. surgical microscopy, histopathology).

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 Sep 2025.

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Department of Engineering with a particular emphasis on hydrogen technologies. The EPSRC project, UNISON, seeks to improve the combustion of neat ammonia by exploring fuel additive-enhanced combustion or a catalytic burner that enable ammonia-hydrogen co-combustion. Key goals include optimising combustion efficiency, minimising emissions, and providing industry-ready solutions for ammonia combustion. Working within the EPSRC project, they will focus on clean combustion challenges, analysing and interpreting research findings, supporting the development of innovative combustors, and driving innovative technology solutions. The role also involves contributing to research funding bids, supporting licensing or spin-out activities, and enhancing the broader public understanding and commercial impact of the research.

The post-holder is employed to work on the UNISON project which will be led by Prof Dawei Wu. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Qualifications

A good first degree in an?Engineering related subject. A PhD (or be close to submission) in?Mechanical/Thermal Engineering or related subject.

Experience

Experience in conducting high quality academic research. Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals. Demonstrable ability to present research papers at?international?conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community. Experience in?designing and operating combustion test rigs; developing analytical engineering models using CONVERGE or other CFD tools; and conducting experimental studies in a mechanical engineering laboratory environment, with a focus on hydrogen-related technology development.

Skills

Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings. Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria 

Experience

Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career. A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career. Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics. The Public Health Research Center (PHRC) at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a Research Assistant Bioinformatician with experience in population genetics and machine learning to join its team. The ideal candidate will have experience in bioinformatics, whole-genome sequencing data analysis and predictive modelling. The role offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary research environment alongside epidemiologists, geneticists and computational biologists. The PHRC is focused on understanding the factors influencing health outcomes and traits related to the most common non-communicable diseases in the UAE. This is achieved by investigating and integrating diverse data sources, including epidemiological, clinical, genetic, and multi-omic data. The successful candidate will benefit from the support of established Core Bioinformatics and Sequencing Platforms and High-Performance Computing facilities.
