Position Overview

The University of the Pacific invites applications for the position of Director, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This is a full-time, 12-month leadership role based on the Stockton campus, with responsibilities extending across Pacific’s three locations in Stockton, Sacramento, and San Francisco.

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Health and Wellness, the Director provides vision, leadership, and administrative oversight for CAPS. The Director plays a critical role in advancing student well-being, reducing barriers to learning, and fostering academic success by ensuring access to high-quality, inclusive, and culturally responsive mental health services.

Key Responsibilities

The Director will:


	Provide leadership and supervision for CAPS operations across three campuses.
	Develop strategic goals, programs, and quality improvement measures aligned with the university’s mission.
	Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate professional staff, doctoral interns, and trainees.
	Deliver direct clinical services, including therapy, consultation, and crisis intervention.
	Coordinate after-hours mental health crisis consultation with Student Life leadership and Proto Call.
	Lead outreach and prevention initiatives, including orientation and educational programs.
	Administer CAPS’ training program for doctoral psychology interns, including clinical supervision.
	Manage the departmental budget and oversee resource allocation.
	Ensure compliance with APA ethical standards, university policies, and state/federal regulations.
	Oversee electronic scheduling, record-keeping, and departmental assessment efforts.
	Serve as a consultant to faculty, staff, and families concerned about student well-being.
	Partner with campus colleagues and community mental health providers to strengthen student support.
	Participate in divisional and university committees, representing CAPS at professional organizations.
	Support staff professional development and foster a collaborative, inclusive work environment.

Minimum Qualifications


	Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related discipline.
	At least five (5) years of professional experience with evidence of supervisory and administrative responsibilities.


Preferred Qualifications


	Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
	Licensure in California (or licensed in another state with the ability to obtain California licensure within six months of hire).
	Four (4) years of post-doctoral clinical experience, preferably with late adolescent and emerging adult populations.
	Previous administrative leadership experience in a higher education counseling center.
	Experience supervising professional staff and psychology doctoral interns.
	Demonstrated success in working with diverse student populations and advancing equity in mental health services.
	Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.


Work Schedule and Environment


	Most work is performed during standard business hours.
	Availability required for after-hours staff support, Proto Call consultation, and outreach events.
	Moderate travel required to Sacramento and San Francisco campuses.
	Work primarily in a standard office environment.


Additional Requirements


	Valid driver’s license and eligibility under the University’s fleet rules.
	Background check and disclosure compliance under California Assembly Bill 810.


Compensation


	Hiring Range: $130,000 – $140,000 annually.
	Final offer considers qualifications, scope of responsibilities, internal equity, and market factors.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,250,200 (approximately USD154,350) for the position of Full Professor, MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions.
