The National University of Food Technologies (NUFT) in Ukraine has a rich history dating back to 1884 when it was established in the town of Smila. Initially affiliated with Ukraine's sugar industry, it expanded its scope over the years.  
In 1930, the National University of Food Technologies relocated to Kyiv, where it continued to grow and underwent several name changes. It became Ukraine's State University of Food Technologies in 1993 and achieved National University status in 2002. 
Today, the National University of Food Technologies is situated in an eight-building complex in the centre of Kyiv, near prominent landmarks. It offers a wide range of programmes across institutes of food technology, technical engineering and economics, and management, as well as faculties of biotechnology and environment, automation and computer science, and hotels, restaurants, and tourism. 
The National University of Food Technologies has a strong international presence, admitting international students since 1950. It places a strong emphasis on research, with numerous patents registered, many of them co-authored by students.

The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in the Department of Engineering, with a focus on digital twin modelling for marine engines and propulsion systems involving different decarbonisation technologies, as well as the development of AI-driven decision-making tools for optimising low-carbon marine powertrain designs. This position is part of the Horizon Europe project SEASTARS, which aims to transform maritime sustainability by integrating cutting-edge emission-reduction and efficiency technologies into four retrofit and four new-build vessels operating across inland, short-sea, and high-seas shipping routes.

The project seeks to deliver industry-relevant tools that enable optimal design and operation of greener vessels, backed by real-world demonstrations. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of multi-disciplinary modelling, advanced AI algorithms, and decision-support tool development. Responsibilities will include programming, analysing and interpreting data, and contributing to innovative solutions that support maritime decarbonisation. Additional duties involve supporting research funding proposals, engaging in licensing or spin-out activities, and enhancing the public and commercial impact of the research.

This post is fixed term on the Horizon Europe SEASTARS project, e.g. the funding is available from 01/07/2025 for a fixed period only; the project is time limited and will end on 31/12/2027.

Qualifications

A good first degree in an?Engineering related subject. A PhD (or be close to submission) in?Marine,?Mechanical, Thermal Engineering or Computer Science.

Experience

Experience in conducting high quality academic research. Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals. Demonstrable ability to present research papers at?international?conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community. Experience in?developing engines and/or fuel cells models in GT-Power. Experience in?using MATLAB/?Python/Siemens Simcentre to?develop AI-assisted programme and models for powertrains and propulsion systems within the transportation and energy sectors.

Skills

Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings. Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Desirable Criteria 

Experience

Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career. A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career. Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics. Experience in?developing cryogenic hydrogen storage/compressor/pump models and conducting experimental cryogenics studies. Experience in?working with industry partners and other internal or external parties to maximise the research impact and establish new research collaboration.?

The Role and Department 

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) offers guidance, expert advice, and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related activities. This includes securing funding, collaborating with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice, and supporting professional development. This post will sit in the Commercialisation and Economic Development team, under the management of the Senior Policy Engagement Manager.

The role will undertake evaluation of a major place-based creative collaboration, Into the Light. This three-year programme, which began on 1 April 2024, is funded by the Arts Council England, the Shared Prosperity Fund, Durham County Council and others. I has been designed to cultivate talent, widen access to creative education, enhance the skills of the cultural workforce, and break down barriers to working in the creative industries .Into the Light is delivered by Durham County Council in partnership with Beamish Museum, The Bowes Museum, Durham University, Ensemble '84, The Forge, No More Nowt, Northern Heartlands, Redhills CIO and TIN Arts. The programme consists of eight projects over three interconnecting themes: Grow (Inspiring Children and Young People), Cultivate (Building the Cultural Workforce) and Engage (Connecting Communities through Culture).

Durham University is leading on the evaluation of the programme, with the aim of undertaking a programme-wide study to analyse the impact of investment in cultural and creative programmes, activities and events in the County through the principles of Inclusive Economy, an economic development model adopted by Durham, Newcastle and going forward by the North East Combined Authority (NECA).

The Lead Evaluator will be formally line managed by the Senior Policy Engagement Manager in RIS with academic oversight and support provided by Professor Janet Stewart, Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The post-holder will report to the Into the Light Evaluation Advisory Board, chaired by Professor Janet Stewart, Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The Lead Evaluator will have access to the expertise of the Durham Research Methods Centre and will be assisted by two postdoctoral research associates, based in academic departments, who are due to be appointed in June 2025. As well as delivering this important project, the role will offer useful learning to wider work being undertaken to explore a future institutional evaluation offer. These include exploring potential frameworks with partners, which, in addition to providing capacity for programme and process evaluation, enhance the opportunity for a range of collaborative research opportunities.

In this role, you'll be teaching and mentoring the next generation of nuclear medicine professionals while also contributing to research and staying closely connected with industry. As a Lecturer, Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine), you'll play a key part in program delivery, curriculum development, and academic leadership within your area of practice.

You'll be an active member of the broader medical radiations community, building and maintaining strong industry relationships that benefit both your teaching and student experience. You'll work closely with colleagues in a collaborative teaching environment and keep students and peers up to date with developments in your field. There may also be opportunities to take on course coordination responsibilities, depending on your experience and interests.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:

Discipline of Medical Radiations

The discipline of Medical Radiations contributes to teaching and research in the fields of Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, and Nuclear Medicine, in the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences. The undergraduate program enables graduates to be eligible for registration to practice as Radiographers, Radiation Therapists, or Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Australia under AHPRA.

The program is structured to integrate foundation sciences, clinical sciences, and clinical skills to produce capable graduates who can practice as healthcare professionals with skills relevant to their stream. There is also a strong focus on Work Integrated Learning to ensure students are exposed to real-life clinical scenarios from the time they begin their studies within the discipline. Staff and students in the discipline have the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art equipment.

The discipline promotes strong, interdisciplinary collaboration within Applied Health and contributes to the mission and vision of the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, the STEM College, and RMIT University. It also promotes strong links with industry partners and regularly engages with these and other stakeholders.
