The Role

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Department of Engineering with a particular emphasis on hydrogen technologies. The EPSRC project, UNISON, seeks to improve the combustion of neat ammonia by exploring fuel additive-enhanced combustion or a catalytic burner that enable ammonia-hydrogen co-combustion. Key goals include optimising combustion efficiency, minimising emissions, and providing industry-ready solutions for ammonia combustion. Working within the EPSRC project, they will focus on clean combustion challenges, analysing and interpreting research findings, supporting the development of innovative combustors, and driving innovative technology solutions. The role also involves contributing to research funding bids, supporting licensing or spin-out activities, and enhancing the broader public understanding and commercial impact of the research.

The post-holder is employed to work on the UNISON project which will be led by Prof Dawei Wu. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols.

Qualifications

A good first degree in an?Engineering related subject. A PhD (or be close to submission) in?Mechanical/Thermal Engineering or related subject.

Experience

Experience in conducting high quality academic research. Demonstrable ability to write material of a quality commensurate with publication in highly-ranked journals. Demonstrable ability to present research papers at?international?conferences and communicate complex information to specialists and within the wider academic community. Experience in?designing and operating combustion test rigs; developing analytical engineering models using CONVERGE or other CFD tools; and conducting experimental studies in a mechanical engineering laboratory environment, with a focus on hydrogen-related technology development.

Skills

Demonstrable ability to work cooperatively as part of a team, including participating in research meetings. Ability to work independently on own initiative and to strict deadlines. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Experience

Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, commensurate with stage of career. A track record of presenting research at conferences, symposia, or meetings, commensurate with stage of career. Demonstrable ability to develop research proposals and designs in collaboration with other academics. The IoPPN is divided into 14 academic departments across three major academic Schools: Academic Psychiatry, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience.

The Department of Psychosis Studies, part of the School of Academic Psychiatry, is one of the world’s leading centres for research into psychotic disorders. Our research includes the following major themes: Comorbidities & transdiagnostic approaches; Interventions; Neuroscience & biological mechanisms; Prediction and analytics; Risk factors and population health; and Treatment resistance. Our work involves a wide range of methodologies, including artificial intelligence/ digital technologies and interventions, cognitive neuroscience approaches, epidemiology, experimental medicine and clinical trials, ex vivo analyses, genomics, health service and applied research, meta-analysis and evidence synthesis, prevention and early intervention, psychological approaches, psychopathology/ phenomenology, neuroimaging, real world data analyses and natural language processing, and stem cell techniques.

About the role

This is an exciting position where the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of an internationally leading team of researchers investigating biological bases of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders and the mechanism of action of treatments. The team has a particular interest in investigating the mechanism of action of cannabinoids and a key component of this program of work will involve the application of cutting edge neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI to investigate the neural substrates underpinning the harmful effects of recreational cannabis use as well as potential therapeutic effects of cannabinoids.

They will be expected to support ongoing studies. For example, mechanistic sub studies linked to clinical trials as well as observational studies and contribute to grant applications or protocols. This often involves neuroimaging or cognitive paradigms.

The successful candidate will will work closely with Prof Sagnik Bhattacharyya?www.kcl.ac.uk/people/professor-sagnikbhattacharyya?and other investigators based at King’s College London, in particular Dr Latha Velayudhan?www.kcl.ac.uk/people/dr-latha-velayudhan They will also interact with clinical fellows, research assistants, postdoctoral researchers and PhD students working in the group.

This is a full-time, fixed term post, currently funded for 12 months with potential for extension and an anticipated start from August 2025. The successful candidate will be encouraged to apply for postdoctoral fellowships

About the role

The Research Operations Manager is a key position in the Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) Faculty Office that plays an important role in the development and implementation of post-award processes across the five departments of the Faculty. The successful candidate will be responsible for the oversight of post-award support across NMES and provide guidance and support to both our academics and the department-based Senior Research Operations Officers and Research Operations Managers.

The Faculty of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) comprises Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, Mathematics, and Physics – all departments highly rated in research activities and a wide-ranging portfolio of education programmes.
