Make a Real Impact in Defence Research

We're looking for an Industry Research Fellow or Research Assistant to join a collaborative team working on high-impact research in defence materials and structures. This role is part of a partnership between RMIT and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), through the Centre for Advanced Defence Structures and Materials Experimentation (CADSME).

If you're passionate about experimental testing, real-world research, and contributing to Australia's defence capabilities, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

You'll be part of a research team focused on large-scale structural testing of aircraft components. You'll support the chief investigator in delivering high-quality reports, preparing publications, and helping to share the findings through conferences and journals. As your experience grows, you'll take on more responsibility and contribute more independently to the research program. We welcome applicants at either Level A (Research Assistant) or Level B (Research Fellow).

To be successful for the Level A Industry Research Assistant appointment, you will have (but not limited to):


	Evidence of research output including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports in the field.
	Experience and/or understanding of structures and materials testing, preferably large-scale testing.
	Experience and/or understanding of basic test concepts such as load cells, actuators, strain gauges and hydraulic systems.
	Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.
	Ability to build effective networks and generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government.
	Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage varying workloads and respond to changing priorities as required.
	Demonstrated high level communication skills.


To be successful for the Level B Industry Research Fellow appointment you have (but not limited to):


	Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs as evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.
	Demonstrated ability to supervise higher degree by research candidates.
	Experience and/or understanding of structures and materials testing, preferably large-scale testing.
	Experience and/or understanding of basic test concepts such as load cells, actuators, strain gauges and hydraulic systems.
	Ability to work autonomously whilst displaying a strong commitment to work in a team environment, including the demonstrated ability to confidently and effectively work with colleagues, project team leaders, and industry partners.
	Excellent interpersonal and communications skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by research candidates, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.

Platforms Division's (PD) Structures and Materials Test Centre (SMTC) is a national asset, the largest and best-equipped facility of its type in the Asia Pacific. The SMTC has, in 70+ years of operations, accumulated an impressive record of accomplishment of research and client outcomes. The latter, when measured in repair/refurbishment cost avoidance terms alone, exceeds $1 billion over several programs. The facility retains strong Defence client support and has an active ongoing research program in structures and materials experimentation.

The SMTC provides Defence clients with innovative testing solutions to their sustainment and certification requirements and is a key driver of academic research and training of the future Defence Industry science, engineering and technical workforce.

Assistant Professor Position (Tenure Track) in Living State Physics

We are looking for Assistant professor in the emerging field of Living State Physics, which integrates concepts, methodologies, tools, and techniques from the physical sciences and engineering to advance our understanding of processes and properties distinctive to living organisms and systems.

Successful candidates should have a strong background, for example, in molecular and cellular biophysics, biophotonics, non-equilibrium phenomena, or biological engineering.

While the scope of the position is broad, the new Assistant professor is expected to have a strongly experimental approach to research. Their research can span spatial scales ranging from single molecules and proteins to multicellular systems.

The position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level which is full-time fixed-term entry-level faculty position on the Aalto University tenure track. NBE is committed to fostering an inclusive environment with diverse faculty members. Women and others underrepresented in the field of this call are particularly encouraged to apply.

Role and requirements

The position is open to individuals with a doctorate in physics or a closely related field. The new professor is expected to build and lead an internationally recognized research group and establish an ambitious research program in the burgeoning research field of Living State Physics.

The new professor shall actively engage in education in this field at the NBE department and also wider at Aalto University and should participate in the development of our curricula at Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral levels.?

	The Aalto University Nanomicroscopy Center provides access to high-resolution electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy, and X-ray scattering instruments for soft, hard, and biomaterial sample imaging and characterisation.
	Micronova is part of OtaNano, Finland's national research infrastructure for micro- and nanotechnology. It is run jointly by VTT (Technical Research Centre of Finland) and Aalto University. Its mission is to develop innovative, enabling technologies, and to apply these in practical micro- and nanosystems. Research at Micronova focuses on micro and nanotechnology, material and device physics, and optics.
	Aalto Neuroimaging (ANI) Infrastructure is hosted at NBE. ANI houses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at Advanced Magnetic Imaging (AMI) Centre, magnetoencephalography (MEG) at MEG Core, and behavioral and psychophysical measurement systems at Aalto Behavioral Laboratory (ABL).

About You

In this role, you'll be teaching and mentoring the next generation of nuclear medicine professionals while also contributing to research and staying closely connected with industry. As a Lecturer, Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine), you'll play a key part in program delivery, curriculum development, and academic leadership within your area of practice.

You'll be an active member of the broader medical radiations community, building and maintaining strong industry relationships that benefit both your teaching and student experience. You'll work closely with colleagues in a collaborative teaching environment and keep students and peers up to date with developments in your field. There may also be opportunities to take on course coordination responsibilities, depending on your experience and interests.

To be successful in this position, you'll have:


	Demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver programs at undergraduate level, including online delivery, and the ability to produce high quality curriculum or program materials.

The School of Health and Biomedical Sciences is comprised of three Academic areas, Allied Health, Applied Health, and Biomedical Sciences. Discipline of Medical Radiations

The discipline of Medical Radiations contributes to teaching and research in the fields of Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, and Nuclear Medicine, in the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences. The undergraduate program enables graduates to be eligible for registration to practice as Radiographers, Radiation Therapists, or Nuclear Medicine Technologists in Australia under AHPRA.

The program is structured to integrate foundation sciences, clinical sciences, and clinical skills to produce capable graduates who can practice as healthcare professionals with skills relevant to their stream. There is also a strong focus on Work Integrated Learning to ensure students are exposed to real-life clinical scenarios from the time they begin their studies within the discipline. Staff and students in the discipline have the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art equipment.

The discipline promotes strong, interdisciplinary collaboration within Applied Health and contributes to the mission and vision of the School of Health and Biomedical Sciences, the STEM College, and RMIT University. The holder of this job is also responsible for supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses?and mentoring PhD students. ?

Research Responsibilities?

As a faculty member of a research-oriented university, the successful candidate is?expected to significantly contribute to the scientific profile of VGU through innovation.?This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as?applied research in the fields of distributed systems and high-performance computing.?The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly?desirable.?

Administrative responsibilities?

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the Computer Science Program by participating in administrative, marketing and other public activities of the program in consultation with the Academic Coordinator of the study program and the German partner university, namely Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences. She or he is also expected to contribute actively to the academic self administration of the Faculty of Engineering and university by being willing to stand for election to the Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or other bodies.

Qualification

Candidates must hold a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as will experience and understanding of the German higher education system and methodology. Other requirements include:


	An outstanding academic record with a focus on computer networks, parallel &?distributed computing, or other areas closely related to it?
	?Proven expertise in edge computing, load balancing, parallelism, virtual?machine technologies and distributed file systems?
	Strong track record of successful research activities and publications in?international and peer-reviewed journals in the related area?
	Proven teaching experience with strong self-motivation combined with a passion?for teaching and research?
	Experience in industry is an advantage ?
	Proven excellent English proficiency:?
	Candidates who are from non-native English-speaking countries should include?one of the following valid English proficiency certificates; IELTS 6.5, TOEFL?548(PBT), TOEFL 84 (iBT), TOEFL 212 (CBT), CEFR level B2 or Aptis level?C1 at the time of application submission. Alternatively, candidates who do not?hold a valid English proficiency certificate at the submission time need to be?internally assessed at VGU to meet the criterion stated above.1 ?
