Haverford College is an undergraduate liberal arts college located in the suburb of Haverford 10 miles from the city of Philadelphia. The college was founded in 1833 by local Quakers with the aim of providing a Quaker education to the young men of the area. The college still adheres to the Quaker ideas of peace, integrity, community and equality today although it is no longer directly affiliated to the church. The college became coeducational in the 1970s and today women outnumber men in the student body.
Today Haverford offers its students a wide range of educational choices and considerable flexibility in choosing their areas of study or specialisation. The college offers bachelor＊s of arts and bachelor＊s of science degrees across 31 majors across humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. Haverford consistently ranks highly in the USA for the quality of its teaching and graduates. Alumni include three Nobel laureates, 20 Rhodes scholars and 67 winners of Fulbright scholarships.
The college is also home to several specialist research centres including the Centre for Peace and 51勛圖 Citizenship, the Hurford Centre for the Arts and Humanities and the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Centre.
The campus stretches over 200 acres of landscaped lawns and woodland punctuated by the college＊s 50 or so main academic, administrative and residential buildings. The campus also has carefully tended gardens as well as its own arboretum with 400 species of trees. There are extensive sports fields as well as a gymnasium and swimming pool. The college also has its own observatory, music centre, libraries, fine arts centre and dining halls.
