Elizabethtown College, nicknamed E-town, was established as a coeducational college in 1899 by members of the Church of the Brethren. The Brethren is a branch of Protestant Christianity which follows the New Testament and is committed to nonviolence.
All students are assigned a financial counsellor throughout their stay to minimise money problems and discuss financial aid options.
The college offers all students the chance to take part in at least two of what it terms ※signature learning experiences§: in-depth and real world projects that take place in the lab, local towns or even overseas. Signature learning experiences are: internship, practicum or field placement, supervised research, capstone course, project or development portfolio, cross cultural experience, or community-based learning.
Arts and performance are valued at the college, and students have the opportunity to have their work displayed in one of several galleries and theatres. The Leffler Chapel and Performance Center is a main site for music, dance and drama performances, as well as for worship. Art exhibitions take place throughout the year at three on-campus galleries.
The college motto is ※Educate for Service§. One way this is put into practice is through the annual autumn ※Into the Streets§ walk, in which students and faculties spend a weekend volunteering in the community by litter-picking, raking leaves and helping the elderly.
The borough of Elizabethtown is home to shops, theatres and a chocolate factory which gives the area a delicious cocoa scent. Students can take a trip to Hershey Park or even play a game of paintball at the local facility.
