institution

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania (commonly shortened to ESU) is located in the town of East Stroudsburg, situated in the majestic Pocono Mountains. The university opened in 1893 as a private teacher training school called East Stroudsburg Normal School. It transferred to the state in 1920, and became East Stroudsburg University in 1983.

Over 50 undergraduate and 20 graduate programmes are offered at the university. There are five ESU colleges: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Management, the College of Education, the College of Health Sciences and the University College. The latter offers three programmes: international studies, women and gender studies and interdisciplinary studies.

All first year students live on-campus in halls of residence, with the exception of local commuter students.

The ESU Women*s Centre offers a safe support and discussion space for female students. Some of the services it provides are drop-in counselling, workshops on topics such as sexual harassment and eating disorders and crisis intervention.

Fitness classes are available at the ESU recreation centre, or students can visit independently to enjoy the elevated running track, basketball and racquetball courts and gymnasium. Students can also use Stony Lodge, a facility nine miles north of the ESU campus which has a lodge, cabins, a climbing tower, obstacle course and equipment for activities such as skiing, Frisbee and ice skating.

Natural beauty spots such as the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area are a short drive away, providing perfect spots for camping, hiking, water sports and skiing.
