The Catholic University of Eastern Africa is based in Lang¡¯ata, a southwestern suburb of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi.

It was founded as the Catholic Higher Institute of East Africa in 1984 and was opened the following year by Pope John Paul II, who was visiting Kenya. It was raised to university status in 1992.

It has a second campus at Eldoret, roughly 200 miles to the north-west of Nairobi.

It has faculties of theology, arts and social science, education, science, law, and library and information science and the schools of business and economics, nursing and graduate studies.

The main research centres focus on Canon Law, and on social justice and ethics.

The men¡¯s rugby union team play in national competitions as the Catholic Monks.
