Innovation centres planned
The government is to spend ?30 million setting up five innovation centres at universities in Durham and Newcastle, Manchester, Bristol, the West Midlands and Sheffield. The plan was announced in the Opportunity For All In A World Of Change white paper today.

Cambridge put on spot over poor safety record
Cambridge University*s health and safety record is being debated by its senate today. It has fallen foul of the Health and Safety Executive at least eight times since it lost a package of radioactive material in 1999.

British scientist first to see asteroid surface
A British scientist was the first person to see the rocky surface of the asteroid Eros from ground level when an American spacecraft touched down. Louise Prockter, a planetary geologist originally from London, is an adviser to the camera teams beaming out pictures of the asteroid.
