UN envoy to visit jailed Burma leader
A Brazilian politics professor is expected to see pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, under arrest since September, in the first visit by a United Nations human rights official to the country. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, appointed UN human rights rapporteur, has seen military and government officials, a sign of the ruling junta*s increasing openness.

Algerian academics support army
Two hundred university teachers from the National University of Algeria have signed a statement condemning "the orchestrated campaigns against the Algerian army" in a book, La Sale Guerre (The Dirty War), written by Mohammed Said, a dissident soldier. The book reveals atrocities carried out by the army in the war against Islamic fundamentalists.
