Another engineer on the up is Robert Spink, newly appointed parliamentary private secretary to Ann Widdecombe, secretary of state for employment. Now MP for Castle Point in Dorset, he has a first in engineering from Manchester and a PhD from Cranfield, and was EMI graduate apprentice of the year in 1971.
