The third round of awards by the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts saw 34 projects share £1.9 million.
University-based winners included Linda Long at Exeter, who is generating music from three-dimensional protein structures, and a team at Sussex that is working on a quantum computing device the size of a wedding ring. An award to Norman Lindsay at Loughborough will help him market an invention to improve golfers' accuracy. Other projects ranged from engineering to poetry.
Nesta is funded by £10 million from the National Lottery.
