Hello, I am Miral Gibson, the deputy director of疾ducation at the University of Roehampton business盎chool.

And in this very short video, I'll be盎haring with you how the University of Roehampton畜usiness school transitioned into remote learning畝nd the online world and, in particular, I'll畜e talking about how we try to create an online疹earning community for our students in that new疾nvironment.

Now, just like learning and teaching,眨e really think that building an online community疳s pedagogy-led. So, we have to think carefully畝bout how we're going to manage the relationship畜etween technology and pedagogy.

And we盍eally wanted to hit all of these elements皋f interactions that exist within the learning疾nvironment  what really make up the learning畚ommunity.

So, we looked at three elements of疳nteractions:

  • The student-to-student interaction

  • The student-to-tutor interaction and then

  • The student-to-content interaction.

Now,疳n terms of the student-to-tutor interaction we盍eally wanted to create an educator's presence畝nd we wanted to make it fun but simple.

So, we真sed a number of digital apps for recording  both眠ideo and audio apps. Some of the video tools that眨e've used are like Panopto, Screencast-O-Matic,眨hich I'm using right now.

We used podcast tools疹ike Vocaroo and we really introduced ourselves to盎tudents before they even joined the course.

So,皋ur virtual learning environment was built with眩hat space, where students could go in and see眨ho they'd be interacting with before they even盎tarted.

And that, for us, was really important畜ecause it minimised the levels of uncertainty眩hat could be related or associated with virtual疹earning or even a new way of learning. It also疾stablished the first connections within that皋nline world.

We also wanted to make sure that we疲ad very good visual presence, so weve uploaded皰hotos of ourselves and we made these personal and痂ore human.

So, we uploaded photos of us with皋ur friends, with our family, with our pets,留oing our hobbies. And, in that same space, there眨ere also opportunities for students to upload眩heir own photos and also tell us a bit more about眩hemselves. But also chat with us and speak to us.胼

So, I'm now just going to share another screen眨ith you. This is an example of our colleague眨ho had a photo of himself and his daughters畝t a Rammstein concert under the Meet your module 眩eam heading in our Moodle, and this is the疹ink where students could chat with Steven.

Now, in terms of the盎tudent-to-content interaction,眨e all had teaching content, so we were疸ot trying to reinvent the wheel. But the皋nly difference is that the interaction with the content online is slightly different,疾specially when it is asynchronously taught.

So, some of the asynchronous material provides盎tudents with the opportunity to access [it]畝nywhere at any time, so we really wanted to畚reate these opportunities whereby students could盎top and reflect and interact with the content.胼

So, we used a number of audio and video痂aterial, like Youtube links and podcasts,畝nd we embedded in these some polls and quizzes真sing tools like Kahoot!, Mentimeter and Padlet.胼

And all these provide different opportunities for盎tudents in asynchronous as well as synchronous眩eaching, so that they can reflect on some of the疼nowledge they gained, and start engaging with眩he material through reflective practice.

And,病inally, our third element of interaction is the盎tudent-to-student interaction.

And this is where眨e use the number of discussion forums, which is畝bsolutely fantastic because it gives students眩he opportunity to create quality responses,畝nd that makes the connections in the online疹earning environment more meaningful.

Padlet疳s an absolutely fantastic tool as well, where盎tudents could be more creative and upload their皋wn videos, upload their own audio links.

And this疳s how we created an inclusive environment online,眨here everybody could feel safe, and that was畜uilt on trust and respect.

I'm very happy to眩alk about any of these in more detail in the病uture. Thank you very much for listening.
