The Legacy of Independence: South Asia 1947-1997

A series of four lectures, organised in association with The 51³Ô¹Ï Supplement, with support from City University, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Indian subcontinent.

Monday November 10, 5.30pm: "India - End of the First Republic", Professor Lord Desai, director, Centre for the Study of 51³Ô¹Ï Governance, LSE.

Monday November 17, 5.30pm: "The South Asian Story - A Study in Contradiction", Professor S. R. Osmani, University of Ulster.

Monday November 24, 5.30pm: "Contrasting Visions - Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru and the West", Andrew Robinson, literary editor, The THES.

Monday December 1, 5.30pm: "Imagining India", Nayantara Sahgal, novelist and journalist.

All lectures take place at Gresham College, Barnard's Inn Hall, Holborn, London EC1.
