King's College, London. John Deathridge, former reader in music from Cambridge University, has been appointed King Edward chair of music; Irene Higginson, senior lecturer at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and director of research at Chelsea and Westminster Health Authority, chair of palliative care and policy evaluation; John Stokes, reader in English at the University of Warwick, chair of English literature; Brian Street, senior lecturer in social anthropology at Sussex University, chair in language education.

The following readers were promoted to personal chairs: John Butt, professor of modern Hispanic studies; Alan Collins, professor of physics; Alan Ebringer, professor of immunology; Conor Gearty, professor of law; Friedhelm Hardy, professor of Indian religions; Efraim Karsh, professor of Mediterranean studies; Malcolm Maden, professor of developmental biology; Leonee Ormond, professor of Victorian studies; Roger Patient, professor of molecular genetics; David Robinson, professor of mathematics; Sarben Sarkar, reader, professor of theoretical physics; Philip Whitfield, professor of parasitology; Michael Yianneskis, professor of fluid mechanics.

The following have also been promoted to personal chairs: David Cowan, director of the Drug Control Centre, professor of pharmaceutical toxicology; Farzin Farzaneh, senior lecturer, professor of molecular medicine; Roland Mayer, senior lecturer, professor of classics; Charles Polkey, senior lecturer in neurology, professor of neurosurgery of epilepsy; Christopher Thurston, senior lecturer in life sciences, professor of microbiology.
