The Institute for Learning and Teaching is pleased that the Association of University Teachers is taking its members' advice and not establishing an alternative mechanism of accreditation of teaching ("AUT set to dump plan to accredit lecturers", THES , January 18).
The AUT poll of 5,000 members elicited 1,618 replies, of which 76 per cent supported a formal system of accreditation and 85 per cent supported the profession's control of the standards and process.
Sixty-four per cent of the respondents were not opposed to the ILT being responsible for the accreditation process. Of 12 local association responses, three were supportive of the AUT's working constructively with the ILT.
