We do not know what Bett will say about absolute levels of pay for the varied groups of university staff nor about the need for restructuring (THES, Opinion, January 29). But the proposals will inevitably lead to an extra cost over and above annual pay settlements. Universities will require extra resources to meet such costs. To argue, as some have, that funds earmarked for the revitalisation of the science base can be diverted into pay is mischievous. To achieve maximum success, we need to unite to persuade government that without specific help, as you say, "a valuable national industry is at risk".
