Lord Briggs gets it spectacularly wrong when he writes that in 1907 Rudyard Kipling became the second British Nobel prizewinner ("Small prize for man, a giant leap for mankind", THES, September 29). The second British laureate was William Randal Creme (1903, for peace) followed the next year by Lord Rayleigh for physics and William Ramsay for chemistry. In 1906, the physics prize went to Joseph Thomson.
