Staff and student unions at Nigeria's 34 universities have begun an indefinite strike in support of 12 million workers already taking industrial action to press the government of Olusegun Obasanjo to cancel an increase in petrol prices. Initially peaceful protests against the price increases have turned violent some of university campuses, with several students killed in clashes with police.
