SOMEONE should point out that it is individuals, not departments, who do research, because your summary of comments about the "flawed basis of the judgements" of the research assessment exercises did not (THES, February 28). In the last assessment period, this (unflagged) individual in a 2 star-rated department recorded a "spend" of some Pounds 1.2 million and some Pounds 2.5 million of (backloaded) research income, mainly from research councils and cognate bodies. Is this a record?
