Richard Cox says Durham University operates an "affirmative recruitment policy for outstanding athletes". Certainly we welcome and encourage applictions from people who combine academic quality with sporting ability, but the emphasis is on the academic performance. Readers should not interpret "affirmative" to mean positive discrimination, a sense in which the word is often used.
