Is the vice-chancellor of the University of Teesside really as incapable of consecutive thought as the National Union of Students seems to be (Letters, THES, September 1)?
How can any of them know before they think about the issue that they would be against any system of top-up fees, no matter how efficiently means-tested such a scheme might be and how much more in the interests of the worse-off students? Or do they really intend that the middle classes should endlessly be subsidised by the less well-off?
