Sir Colin Campbell, Nottingham University's vice-chancellor, has lost sight of the wood for the trees. Fighting to keep some staff on lower wage levels and to give them poorer access to pensions than has been agreed in national negotiations will surely deter academics considering Nottingham as a place to work. Universities succeed if they are able to attract and retain good staff. If Sir Colin is serious about the creation of excellence, does his policy make sense?
