Luton's no university

Your article "Lay off, says Luton, as it plays to strengths" (April 9) prompts me to recall a question. As one of more than 50 members of academic staff of Luton University who were made compulsorily redundant in 2001, I am still waiting for an answer to a question that I asked the university management through your letters page. That is, how, having axed seven departments, including politics, history, modern languages, earth sciences and maths, could Luton continue to call itself a university?

Luton may well have all kinds of virtues as a modern technical college, but it is not a university, and attempts to pretend otherwise are dishonest.
