Your article about the research assessment exercise and new academics is timely ("Young scholars lose out in RAE", September 9).
It is essential that the RAE take account of the pressures facing new academics and does not assume that they could, or should, have similar research outputs as their more established colleagues.
This is especially true in subjects such as education, where such staff are likely to have extremely high teaching loads as well as other commitments.
