Universidade Katyavala Bwila was originally formed as the Instituto Superior de Ciencias de Estado de Benguela in the early 1990s to enhance access to higher education in Angola’s Academic Region II. 
It attained university status in 2009.
Students can study across a range of subjects including maritime law, law, medicine, mechanical engineering, computer science, economics and earth sciences.
The majority of students study on the main campus in Benguela, a few hundred yards from the railway station, while the Lobito campus hosts the Higher Polytechnic Institute.
 A new campus is under development at Baia Farta, 20 miles from the main site. 
Postgraduate courses started in 2018, with a new masters in computer engineering launched in 2023.
Many of the universities international agreements are with Portuguese universities.

About Us

The?Atherton lab (King’s College London)?is seeking an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher to decipher how a set of actin-binding proteins remodels the eukaryotic cytoskeleton, including during cancer and viral pathogenic processes. The Atherton group is based in?Randall Centre for Cell & Molecular Biophysics, home to a diverse array of structural and cellular biology research, which is part of the?School of Basic & Biomedical Sciences. We sit in the?Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine, which has a broad spectrum of research interests spanning fundamental biology, disease, and physiology. We are based at the Guy’s Campus of King’s College London situated in the heart of London. King’s is a founding member of the prestigious Russell Group of world-class, research-intensive universities.

About the role

Filamentous actin (F-actin) dynamically adopts various higher-order architectures to perform defined sub-cellular functions. A host of actin-binding proteins (ABPs) modulate the growth and stability of individual filaments or organise multiple filaments into various bundled and branched networks. This role will focus on a family of actin-binding proteins that regulates the actin cytoskeleton and links it to other intracellular components in the molecular processes underlying neuronal development and synaptic plasticity, cell-cell interactions, viral infection and cancer invasion.

The core techniques used will be single-particle cryo-EM and?in situ?cryo-electron tomography, with support from classical cell biology, molecular biophysics, biochemistry and molecular biology methodologies.

The cryo-EM research group at KCL is fast-growing and the university are investing heavily in the technique. We have access to excellent cryo-EM facilities, including an on-site autoloading JEOL cryoARM200 + K3 direct electron detector and a state-of-the-art Titan Krios electron microscope and FIBSEM equipment at nearby London sites.

The successful applicant should have a demonstrable passion for revealing fundamental molecular mechanisms and hold significant experience in protein expression/purification, structural biology and cell culture. Experience in cryo-EM is essential and experience in?in situ?cryo-ET, fluorescence microscopy and an understanding of cytoskeletal biology and/or neurobiology would be advantageous.

This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract starting no sooner than 2nd February 2026 and ending 1st February 2030.

It is a laboratory-based role and as such it needs to be performed on site for roughly 80% of the time, but there will be opportunities to work remotely for roughly 20% of the time, for example when processing data or preparing manuscripts and presentations.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

	Proficiency in Linux command line usage and cryo-EM processing software

* Please note that this is a PhD level role but candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award of their PhDs will be considered. In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant. Upon confirmation of the award of the PhD, the job title will become Research Associate and the salary will increase to Grade 6.?

Desirable criteria


	Experience in cellular cryo-electron tomography sample preparation, data collection and image processing
	Experience in focussed ion-beam milling (FIBSEM) for for cryo-ET
	Experience in light/fluorescence microscopy and/or correlative light and electron microscopy (CLEM)
	Understanding of the eukaryotic cytoskeleton and its regulation.
	General proficiency in computing, including an understanding of high-performance computing clusters

The Strand Group at King’s College London (KCL) is a small, complex unit dedicated to the understanding of British Government using a historical approach across teaching, research and events. It requires academic staff who have a deep understanding of the policy-making process from the viewpoint of those who work in government, and can work with a complex array of stakeholders, such as business, government and other academic units.

About the role

The Lecturer in Government Studies in a fixed term maternity cover position who will be expected to teach on our core-modules partnered with No.10 Downing Street. This requires not only a deep understanding of the literature and historiography, but the ability to build and maintain relationships with senior figures in No.10 Downing Street.

The post-holder will also be fully responsible for the prestigious module ‘History of Prime Ministerial & Whitehall Defence, Security and Intelligence Decision Making’. This module has created in close alignment with the Ministry of Defence, Cabinet Office and Intelligence departments. The role holder needs to know the history of these institutions to a PhD level.

The role holder will be required to teach both KCL postgraduates and UK Government officials on defence and security history of the UK from 1900 to the present day. They will also have to manage the relationship with the Ministry of Defence and other departments. The role holder will also support the MA Government Studies programme with responsibility for PhD supervision and academic administration.

The Lecturer in Government Studies will join a team of three other academic staff members. As part of a small team, the candidate will need to work collaboratively across a range of areas and research disciplines. The role holder will need an academic focus on British defence history, political history and the machinery of government institutions in the UK at the highest level.

To deliver these complicated and multi-faceted teaching objectives the candidate will have experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and be expert in UK defence and foreign policy making. They will also need a comprehensive understanding of Prime Ministers, HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office.

This is a full-time maternity cover post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an ?a fixed term contract until January 2027.

About the opportunity

The School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering is currently seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join an innovative research program focused on durable low-carbon concretes, corrosion science, and infrastructure asset management. This position forms part of a Smartcrete CRC-funded multi-industry collaboration aimed at enhancing the resilience and service life of critical civil infrastructure assets exposed to corrosive environments, while accelerating the adoption of sustainable and low-carbon materials in the built environment.

A major focus of the role is supporting the implementation of low-carbon cement systems in the construction of civil infrastructure assets. This will involve designing and casting prototype components using low-carbon binders, conducting controlled lab tests, and supporting full-scale field testing to assess long-term durability and performance under real service conditions.

The role also includes leading material characterisation, corrosion analysis, service life modelling, student mentoring, and direct collaboration with industry and university partners to ensure research outcomes are translatable and impactful.

Your key responsibilities will be in:


	lead experimental research on low-carbon concrete durability and corrosion mechanisms, including prototype casting and field trials
	conduct material characterisation using advanced analytical techniques (XRD, SEM/EDS, FTIR, TGA) and material testing
	develop and apply service life modelling and decision support tools to optimise asset management and sustainability
	support student supervision and contribute to technical writing, reporting, and dissemination
	coordinate field testing and engage closely with industry partners and university collaborators
	assist with project coordination, including timelines, deliverables, and compliance with WHS standards.
