A post-doctoral Research Associate is sought to work with Dr David Comerford on the Leverhulme Trust funded project: Accounting for (the loss of) 51吃瓜isation in the Economics of Climate Change.

This project explores the interaction between climate change and globalisation. A globalised economy benefits from the gains from trade, but we know from history that bad economic times are usually associated with retreats from globalisation. An efficient, globalised, economy may be able to make the investments needed to mitigate climate change, but as the climate emergency unfolds, the damage to the economy could undermine globalisation. By building a novel climate-economy model, incorporating the economics of international trade, we will provide invaluable insights for the academic community and policymakers, guiding global efforts towards more effective and sustainable economic and environmental strategies.
Climate change is a global problem that requires globally coordinated policy to solve. Moreover, globalisation not only makes globally coordinated policy easier, but the associated gains provide resources with which climate change can be tackled. However, global economic integration tends to go along with economic progress, and during periods of economic stress we have seen globalisation retreat or reverse. The climate emergency, by creating adverse economic conditions, may make solving the climate problem even harder as countries respond to stresses by retreating into protectionism and autarky, whilst blaming the global order. Indeed, with Brexit, the US-China Trade War, and the rise of nationalistic authoritarian political movements across the world, along with the economic malaise of the cost of living crisis, we may be seeing early signs of this.

The interaction of climate change and globalisation is not well studied. This project fills this research gap by combining elements of international economics and climate change economics, to create an innovative augmented climate-economy model. This model is an academic contribution, and its use in creating simulations and answering policy relevant questions will also be academic outputs, that contribute to the academic understanding of what may become a crucial policy relevant issue.

The successful candidate will have knowledge of and experience in the macroeconomic modelling of climate change, and/or new trade theory modelling. The project will combine these two strands of the economics literature, to produce research that can speak to a highly relevant and topical area of applied economics.

Department of Economics

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop research objectives and proposals, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new research methods, identify sources of funding, and contribute to the securing of funds for research, including drafting grant proposals and planning for future proposals. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. You will join external networks to share information and ideas, inform the development of research objectives and to identify potential sources of funding. You will collaborate with colleagues to ensure that research advances inform departmental teaching effort and you will collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which establish research links with industry and influence public policy and the professions. You will supervise student projects, provide advice to students and contribute to teaching as required by, for example, running tutorials and supervising practical work.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree.

The Finance Directorate is responsible for approximately ?300m of income and expenditure annually, with around 7,500 staff and students having access to our Finance systems to initiate, review and approve financial transactions and reports. Based within the Finance Directorate the successful candidate will have a key role as part of the Finance Helpdesk team who are responsible for providing the highest standard of professional advice and support on a broad range of Finance matters to all our students, staff, external customers and suppliers. This role primarily involves dealing effectively with finance enquiries ensuring resolution within required turnaround times. You will also be required to establish an excellent understanding of the customer experience and contribute to continuous improvement in financial working practices. You will also be required to support financial training courses across the University as well as preparing and delivering training on a one to one basis.

With a formal qualification such as an HND or with considerable relevant experience, you will have a developing track record of contributing at a professional level within a Finance environment. The ideal candidate will have experience of working with Unit4 Business World On within an HE Finance environment. You will have experience of providing excellent customer service delivered with enthusiasm and commitment to providing the highest quality of service and support. With excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you will have the ability to work effectively as part of the Finance Helpdesk team as well as providing support across the wider Finance Directorate.

The School of Interdisciplinary Studies (SIS) was established to deepen interdisciplinary studies and scholarly collaboration. The SIS houses a number of interdisciplinary undergraduate programmes. The appointee will join the teaching team of the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Hons) in Public Management and Smart Governance (PMSG) and is expected to contribute to high quality teaching.

The appointee will be expected to teach courses in Public Management, Data Analytics, Housing Policy, and Public Finance, as well as engage in student advising and mentoring. At the University of Southampton, our research addresses some of the most pressing challenges of today’s world. Now, funded by EPSRC, we are looking for a talented?Postdoctoral Research Fellow?to join the?RADAR-SIGN-BRIDGE?project – an exciting initiative to develop?privacy-preserving radar technology?for?British Sign Language (BSL) recognition and translation.

You will be based in the?School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS), working alongside an interdisciplinary team led by?Dr. Shelly Vishwakarma (s.vishwakarma@soton.ac.uk), in collaboration with partners at the?University of Edinburgh (Centre for Speech Technology Research, CSTR)?and?University College London (Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre, DCAL).

About the role

You will lead the design, development, and validation of?LinguaRadar?– a first-of-its-kind radar simulator for sign language gestures. Your work will involve integrating animation pipelines (e.g., OpenPose, MediaPipe, Blender) with radar signal models, generating synthetic radar datasets, and validating them with real-world measurements from?radar hardware.

As part of the team, you will:


	Build and validate radar signal simulation frameworks for BSL gestures.
	Process skeletal motion data to drive simulation pipelines.
	Conduct radar experiments to calibrate and benchmark simulation outputs.
	Write academic papers, contribute to open-source dataset releases, and present your work at international conferences.


About you

You will bring your passion for advancing radar sensing technology into a new application domain. You will have:


	A PhD* or equivalent qualification / experience in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Signal Processing, or a closely related field.
	Proven experience in radar systems, radar signal processing, and simulation.
	Strong programming skills (Python, MATLAB, or C++).
	Excellent problem-solving skills and a collaborative mindset.


Experience with micro-Doppler or range-Doppler radar analysis, or familiarity with animation/motion capture data processing, would be advantageous.
