A new Latin America ranking published today is dominated by Brazilian institutions, which take almost half the 50 spots.

Although the region’s universities struggle to compete globally in international league tables, the pilot 51³Ô¹Ï ranking highlights top universities in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Costa Rica and Mexico.

Universities in Venezuela, Costa Rica and Peru have never appeared in THE’s World University Rankings until now.

The University of São Paulo leads Brazil’s impressive ranking performance, taking the top position overall. Four other Brazilian institutions make it into the top 10, alongside universities in Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

With a few adjustments to reflect the characteristics of Latin American universities, the Latin America ranking uses the same methodology as the THE World University Rankings, measuring excellence across teaching, research, research influence, industry income and international outlook.

The inaugural ranking follows a Latin America reputation ranking published in May 2016, which revealed the most prestigious universities in the region based on a survey of top scholars.
